General Information

The La Maddalena Archipelago is located in the northeast of Sardinia, within the Strait of Bonifacio. It consists of seven main islands—La Maddalena, Caprera, Budelli, Santa Maria, Razzoli, Spargi, and Santo Stefano—along with dozens of smaller islets, some of which, such as Mortorio and Soffi, are situated south of Capo Ferro. All of these islands are part of the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park, which protects the natural environment while ensuring its public accessibility and enjoyment.

General Information

Geography and Environment

The islands, predominantly granitic, feature jagged coastlines with numerous white sand coves, often enriched by small coastal lagoons behind the dunes. The spontaneous vegetation is highly diverse, boasting many endemic plants and extensive maquis shrubland, where wild olive trees, myrtle, strawberry trees, and mastic trees stand out for their abundance and size. Many areas have undergone reforestation with pines and holm oaks, particularly on the island of Caprera. The surrounding sea is teeming with life, supported by vast Posidonia seagrass meadows that encompass all the islands.

History

Since prehistoric times, the archipelago has served as a bridge between Sardinia and Corsica, a role that has been central to human presence throughout various eras: from the Neolithic period, evidenced by discoveries in the caves of Santo Stefano, Spargi, and La Maddalena, to the 13th century with the establishment of small monasteries, and into the 17th century with the arrival of Corsican farmer-pastors who formed the founding core of the current community. At the end of the 18th century, the archipelago became a Maritime Fortress, leading to a significant population surge that grew from 1,895 to 10,000 inhabitants within just a few years. Consequently, international historical events have shaped the archipelago across different periods and circumstances.

Population

To the original Corsican nucleus of the 17th century, other arrivals were added over time from various Sardinian locations, Campania (primarily fishermen), Liguria (laborers and merchants), Tuscany and Piedmont (stonemasons), and other Tyrrhenian islands such as Capraia, Procida, Ponza, and Malta. The town of La Maddalena is the main inhabited center, stretching along the southern coast of the island of the same name; it serves as the municipal seat and the arrival point for the ferry lines connecting it to Palau on the Gallura coast.

Language

In La Maddalena, a dialect of Corsican origin is spoken, which the inhabitants define as isulanu
